Mental Disorders-Risk Young Marriage

Study in India and Africa indicate that early marriage is often associated with increased risk of transmission of HIV, unwanted pregnancy, and the death of a newborn. Oddly enough, the influence of early marriage on mental health has never been studied. Whereas, in the United States nearly one out of 10 women were married under the age of 18 years.

This is what causes the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto conducted research to understand how early marriage affect mental health in women. From research conducted over nearly 18.645 women married or who have never married, be visible that those who marry early are likely to face the risk of mental illness are higher than women married another.

That counts as a mental health issue here among other depressive disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and dependency on nicotine (these studies classify tobacco dependence as a mental problem). As many as 53 percent of brides under the age of 18 years turned out to have at least one abnormality. Only 49 percent of those who get married at an older age are influenced by one of several conditions. The difference is indeed thin, but the researchers think these differences are statistically significant.

It is not clear why the woman who chooses to marry before entering researched adulthood, however, seem to be factors of pregnancy a prominent role. Almost half of the women who married in the age of early pregnant teens turned out, compared to only 3 percent of those who got married at the age of maturity. Whether married married the young which is why women are more likely to have the disorder, or is it because they have to take care of a child at a young age?

The research was published in the journal of Pediatrics is indeed unable to ascertain whether early marriage is exactly what was behind a number of mental problems, because there are other factors that can be memengaruhinya.

"We currently have only indirect evidence that early marriage may give negative influences on mental health," said Dr Yann Le Strat, a psychiatrist at the Louis-Mourier Hospital of Paris in Colombes, France, who is also a researcher at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto.

One thing is clear, according to Linda j. Waite, a Professor of sociology at the University of Chicago who observes the marital problems, both men and women who marry young are likely to be divorced. If the divorce is then causing mental health problems? Higher divorce rate will decrease when they are in their mid-20s, according to Waite.

Early marriage tends to be more fragile, inter alia due to testosterone levels in young men is too high. "They are also associated with various forms of behaviors that make them a bad husband, such as unfaithful, are often persecuted, and difficult to mingle with others. The other argument is because young people are still trying to understand a lot of things, trying to find its identity established, and themselves. If you get married young, you don't know who you are married and the person is probably going to change, "said Waite.

Although still need further proof, these findings are enough to make researchers to support discontinuation of early marriage in America. Given the large number of women who were forced to marry young, terpakssa or Waite are concerned that this will be a new issue.
